Frozen Lake Becomes A New Mystery in The Pluto

MASSAPEDIA NEWS - Liquid element is believed to have flowed on the planet Pluto in millions of years ago, and is now considered highly liquid may back 'live' there.

The team of NASA scientists reported live from the event Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. Scientific data about Pluto collected by drone robotic New Horizons is often underestimated.

One of them is the mystery of the aquatic life there, since Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun so as to make the temperature is very cold, reaching -240 degrees Celsius.

More recently, based on data submitted to the New Horizons team of researchers on Earth, they discover a mysterious frozen locations on the planet's surface is then believed to be made from the liquid.

"After investigation, it shows such a mysterious spot was once a lake. This time can be regarded as a frozen lake," said New Horizons investigation leader Alan Stern.

Citing the National Geographic website, the frozen lake situated in the northern part of a 'sea' of ice named Sputnik Planum. The frozen lake is estimated stretching along 32 kilometers.

Although it is not entirely clear about what kind of liquid flowing in the lake, the researchers estimate that it is nitrogen.

Why can Nitrogen?

As Pluto orbits the Sun, the dwarf planet's changing seasons of the most extreme in the solar system. From there, the researchers have done a simulation that produced the information that atmosfe nitrogen Pluto becomes thinner and thicker dramatically over a period of millions of years.

Then they also believe, Pluto's surface temperature fluctuates with the existing nitrogen, and then lead to changes in the elements of a frozen solid into a gas. Sometimes, the temperature and pressure sometimes rises high enough to make the liquid nitrogen flowing at the surface.

The research team noted, the last time the high temperatures which can dissolve the nitrogen is about 800 thousand years ago.

"The story of these findings, as a planet, will continue to grow," continued Stern.

New Horizons team will continue a thorough investigation in order to uncover the mysteries contained in Pluto.

"From the data obtained, we were not surprised. But really surprised," said NASA senior planetary scientist, Jim Green.

In mid July, the New Horizons successfully passed 12.5 thousand kilometers above the surface of Pluto at a speed of 45 thousand kilometers per hour. The distance to be the closest since New Horizons exploring space for 9.5 years.
