MASSAPEDIA NEWS - More than 100 citizens of India estimated to have died due to the heat wave at the beginning of the dry season which has lasted for the past few days. The heat wave has also caused a number of schools were forced to close and some outdoor work, such as construction projects, halted.


Reported by Reuters on Thursday (21/4), the hottest weather in India is expected to occur in May and June, but in some states has been noted that the air temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, forcing the authorities to take a number of emergency measures.


In the state of Telangana, southern India, as many as 45 people were killed by exposure to hot air, as many as 17 others were killed in Andhra Pradesh. Around 43 people are believed to have died in neighboring Odisha.


Director at the Indian Meteorological Department, Y.K. Reddy stated in Telangana highest temperature in April has broken records at least since 2006.

Reddy stated there are fears the death toll in Telangana will be increased, so that it has issued a heat wave warning for citizens to stay home.


A number of schools in Telangana were closed last week, or about two weeks ahead of the summer holidays. Meanwhile, the state of Odisha ordered schools to close temporarily until 26 April 2016. The construction work was also banned for a few days if temperatures are too high.

"I closed my shop before noon because it was too hot," said Sahu Tulu, sellers a small grocery store in the city of Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.

"You will not stand to be in the store," he said.

A number of steps to overcome heat wave also seen in neighboring Pakistan. The Pakistani government plans to open 500 disaster response center to provide shelter for residents and cold water supply, if the heat wave disaster warning is released.


Until now, there were no reports of deaths due to heat wave in Pakistan. But last year, the heat wave that hit Pakistan killed more than 1,000 people.

"We have enough supplies and staff to cope with situations that might occur," said Seemin Jamali, head of the Department of Emergency Management and Accident at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi.
