Outdoor Lighting Can Disturb Sleeping Quality
MASSAPEDIA NEWS - A recent study conducted by Stanford University found that outdoor lighting, such as street lighting is a major cause of sleep disorders.
Many people do not realize that lighting both outside and inside the house could actually be affecting sleep or recess.

"Settings for outdoor lighting, such as street lights, meant to make us more active in the evening and to improve safety and security. The focus on reducing the negative side of darkness instead turned out to affect our sleep," said Dr. Maurice Ohayon, lead author of the study, as quoted from Medical Daily.

Previously, researchers have checked 15 863 people over eight years. The study participants were asked to answer questions about sleep habits, sleep quality, and health disorders or other mental disorders.
Then, the researchers compared the data they can outdoor lighting in the neighborhood of study participants.

Not only that, the neighborhood around the participants also become a reference. Whether they are in urban areas with a population of more than 500 thousand people or those living in the countryside.
It turned out that participants who live in big cities or outdoor light exposure more likely to experience a lack of sleep. As many as 6 percent of people will experience sleep less than six hours a night compared with those who lived in the darker areas.

Researchers also found that as many as 29 nine percent of the people who live in big cities report that they experience fatigue and dissatisfaction with the quality of sleep, compared with people who live in areas with too much lighting.

And people exposed to much light, on average, 10 minutes less sleep than those who are not exposed to a lot of light.
To avoid the adverse effects of light on sleep, there are some steps you can take. Cover your windows with curtains that are dark. Another option that could use an eye mask to help improve the quality of your sleep.

"Excessive exposure to light at night can affect how we move on during the day and increase the risk of excessive sleepiness," says Ohayon.
