Yahoo Will Laid off 1,600 Employees


The news that Yahoo will layoff employees was not a mere figment. CEO Marissa Mayer said will soon be laying off thousands of employees.

In the report released by the Wall Street Journal, Mayer mentioned employees will be cut by 15 percent, or about 1,600 workers. In addition, Yahoo will shut down some of its business units.

The plan is expected to be announced after Yahoo's fourth-quarter results on Tuesday (2/2) local time. A Yahoo spokeswoman said the company could not comment during a quiet period before the financial statements was announced.

Yahoo has about 11,000 employees as of June 30, 2015, down from December 2014 which at that time numbered 12,500 people.

During this time, Yahoo has struggled to expand the Internet business, which includes the sale of advertising on the search engines, email services, and continue to face competition from Google and Facebook.

Yahoo is currently under pressure to revitalize its business is considered a failure for three years. Even one of the company's investors had to call Mayer reported that the number of employees the company is getting scaled up to 3,000 people.

After laying off thousands of employees, Yahoo reportedly will focus on one major project, namely the digital magazines or digital magazine.
